Drapery Care
-
Inspect draperies daily to confirm that they are hanging properly.
-
Re-attach any pins that have come out of the carriers.
-
Find any pins that have fallen out of the drapery. Reinsert them into pleats so that the top of the pins are 1.5" from the top of the drapery. Pinch the pins tightly closed so that they will not unhook from the master slide or snag the drapery at the overlap.
-
Crease the spaces between the pleats so that they fold outnot back into the rod.
-
Replace any missing or broken drapery wands.
-
Re-anchor any loose or missing brackets to provide secure mounting.
-
Vacuum the drapery with an upholstery attachment on a monthly basis.
-
Maintain the HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning) air filters according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Drapery Cleaning
By following the drapery care procedures, you can minimize the need to launder your draperies throughout their five to seven-year life. When cleaning is required, you have several options.
Professional Cleaning
When possible, professional cleaning is preferred. The perchlorethylene method can be used. It is recommended that the professional be experienced with black-out lined commercial draperies. A trained professional will mark and remove the drapery hooks and replace them in their original position. The repining is very important to ensure that draperies are hung in the proper position relative to the rod and floor.
In-House Laundering
- Carefully take draperies off rods and remove all drapery hooks. Failure to remove hooks will permanently damage draperies. To make repining easier, use an indelible laundry marker to mark the bottom of the hook where the pin point will be re-inserted.
- Fill two stationary tubs 3/4 full with warm water (hot, but comfortable to the touch). Mix 1/2 cup of Wisk detergent in the first tub. Do not use fabric softeners, harsh detergents or bleach.
- Place two pairs (four pieces) of drapery in the first tub filled with the Wisk solution. Agitate the draperies by hand until they are clean. This will take an average of ten minutes, but may need to be adjusted depending on the amount of soil.
- Remove the clean draperies and place them in the second stationary tub filled with clear, warm water. Drain the first tub. Agitate the draperies to remove as much soap as possible. When the first tub is drained, rinse it out and refill it 3/4 full with clear, warm water.
- Transfer the draperies to the first tub and continue to remove soap by agitating. Repeat the rinsing process until all soap is removed. (Three rinses will usually be adequate.)
- Place draperies in a washing machine set on its slowest spin cycle for no more than two minutes.
- Immediately after the spin cycle ends, remove the draperies and re-hang them.
- Leave draperies in the closed position until they have dried so that the lining does not come into contact with itself. Then fold the drapery pleats neatly and stack the draperies off the windows in the open position to set the pleats.
Spot Cleaning
Small soiled areas can be removed with a mild soap solution or a spot remover such as K2R.
IMPORTANT! When cleaning draperies, do not use fabric softeners, harsh detergents or bleach. Rinse thoroughly. Avoid overcrowding in washing machine. Remove and re-hang immediately. Do not place in dryer.
